Daniela 1949

Testadoro Daniela - 1949

the definitive car for the Sport 750 class

History and Context

Daniela (name of Giusti's second child) is considered the maximum development achieved by Testadoro as a racing car manufacturer, as well as the absolute benchmark for the Sport class up to 750cc. This car is the only one of the testadoro that has been produced in small series, even if only in 4 units. Presented in 1949, it had the improvements made for that season to the engine (742cc. And 48 horsepower at 7,000 rpm), a new Isorigid chassis produced by Gilco and a bodywork (also “two-seater torpedo”) designed by Zagato. The tried and tested Giusti / Colombo / Zagato trio produced a highly competitive car appreciated both by the press of the time and by the “gentlemen drivers” of the time. In particular, if the presence of the famous "Isorigid" type small diameter tube frame is not certain on the "Marinella II", the latter is undoubtedly (together with the 48CV Testadoro engine of course), the characterizing element of this car; the chassis of the Daniela is still recognized today as one of the masterpieces of automotive technology of the time. The goodness of the Daniela project is demonstrated by the career that the car has had even after the car manufacturer's retirement from racing, when due to the lack of technical support from the parent company, many Daniela's were implanted with more modern engines from other manufacturers. , often in the "double shaft" version. To testify the importance of the car, as confirmed by some photographs preserved in the archive of the Turin Automobile Museum, some of the greatest protagonists of the automotive movement of the time were present at its presentation: Dante Giacosa, Elio Zagato, Nino Farina and Carlo Biscaretti di Ruffia. To testify the goodness of the project were the numerous victories collected in 1949, among which the Gran Criterium 750 of Monza on June 26 (absolute victory for Daniela No. 8 of Mejnardi). On that occasion, 4 Testadoro Daniela and one Marinella were deployed. Among the other participating Testadoro drivers (Ugo Puma, Antonio Stagnoli, Aquilino Branca) the name of the future great coachbuilder Nuccio Bertone stands out with the number 14. Another important victory for Daniela in 1949 was that at the Senigallia circuit, obtained by Ugo Puma. The presence of at least 4 Daniela and 2 Marinella in the races of the 1949 season justified the creation of the "Squadra testadoro".

Style

Also created by Zagato, the style of this car is determined more by sporting needs than by aesthetics. It is in fact in function of the needle-like use that the car proves to be aggressive, tapered and with a hint of concession to aerodynamics in the part of the tail, where the suspension elements are covered by a fairing that connects with the end part of the " hump ", with the presence of slits for air discharge and consequent cooling of the brakes. The new round grille dominates the front, with a vertical development and consisting of two connected ovoid shapes, with a vaguely "pear" shape. this grille is accompanied by lower air intakes, sometimes joined and sometimes split according to the model produced. The traditional "Hump" is higher than in previous cars and ideally accompanies the flow of air downstream of the driver, with its narrow shape around the head that widens at the shoulders.
